About Moncks Corner

Moncks Corner is in Berkeley County.  Mulberry Castle on the southern boundary of the Fairlawn Barony was constructed in the Jacobean baroque style in 1714. It is the 3rd Oldest House in SC, surviving through many major threatening events.  In 1735 Thomas Monck acquired 1000 acres as one of the Lords Proprietors.  He named the property “Mitton”.  A village formed on a portion of this property and soon came to be known as “Monck’s Corner” and then just “Moncks Corner” to the locals.  In the late 1700s the old village of Moncks Corner began to decline due in part to the Santee Canal, the first canal in America.  Decline continued through the War of 1812 due to the unavailability of British goods. The present-day location of Moncks Corner came to be around the same time the Northeastern Railroad was completed in 1856, prompting construction of a whole new settlement.  Since then Moncks Corner has expanded to include the old village of Moncks Corner and the entire original Mitton Plantation.     

 The long history of this region involved many destructive and compelling events that greatly altered the image of the architectural landscape, creating a cornucopia of building types and construction methods.  The age of some the houses will undoubtedly present opportunities for an inspector to discover outdated and unsafe building methods and materials.  Age isn't the only thing that can muddy the waters when considering the condition of a home, when someone lives in a home for many years the probability increases that they will make repairs or additions, possibly incorrectly or inadequately.  When making repairs themselves, a homeowner may use an unapproved material or inadequate building method, or they may hire a cheap contractor who cuts corners and doesn't pull permits.
